Refurbished NetApp NL-SAS and SAS Hard Drives
NL-SAS drives are NetApp’s capacity option. These 3.5" 7.2K drives go in LFF shelves for backup, archive, and large file shares. 10K SAS drives in the 2.5" form factor deliver more IOPS for production workloads and hybrid FAS aggregates.
For older systems, the range also includes 15K and Fibre Channel drives. That way you can replace a failed disk in a legacy shelf with the exact part it was built for.
Refurbished NetApp SSDs and NVMe Flash
NetApp SAS SSDs are the building blocks of AFF all-flash arrays and the cache layer in Flash Pool aggregates on FAS systems. Newer NVMe-based systems use NetApp NVMe SSDs. Flash Cache modules sit in the controller itself and speed up read-heavy workloads without adding drives.
Encrypted drives are available too. They need key management in ONTAP, so only order them if your system already runs encrypted storage.
NetApp Part Numbers and Drive Compatibility
NetApp systems only accept NetApp-qualified drives with NetApp firmware, so always order by NetApp part number. Most drives carry both an X-number, such as X477A, and a numeric part number starting with 108- or 111-. In ONTAP, the same drive shows a model string like X423_ followed by a vendor code.
E-Series systems use their own drives with E-X part numbers, and these aren’t interchangeable with FAS or AFF drives. Not sure what fits? Will a refurbished NetApp drive work in my shelf?
Yes, as long as the part number matches a drive qualified for your shelf and ONTAP version. Match the interface, form factor, and capacity of the failed drive, and ONTAP will take the replacement in as a spare.
How do I find the part number of a failed NetApp drive?
Check the label on the drive carrier, or look up the model in ONTAP with the storage disk show command. Send us either one and we’ll match it to the right refurbished drive.
Can I use E-Series drives in a FAS or AFF system?
No. E-Series drives run different firmware and only work in E-Series systems. FAS and AFF systems need drives with standard NetApp X-numbers or 108- part numbers.
