NetApp Controller Memory and NVRAM

Each NetApp controller uses system memory plus non-volatile memory that protects write data. Incoming writes are logged to NVRAM before they’re committed to disk, so a failed NVRAM module or battery can take a controller offline. NetApp Flash Cache and Boot Media

Flash Cache cards add a read cache inside the controller and speed up read-heavy workloads without extra drives. Boot media holds the ONTAP boot image: older controllers use CompactFlash cards, and newer ones use mSATA or M.2 devices. A failed boot device stops a controller from starting, so replacing it with the same part number is the quickest fix.

Can I use standard server RAM in a NetApp controller?
No. NetApp controllers only support memory with NetApp part numbers for that specific controller model. Order by the 107- or X-number on your current module to make sure it’s compatible.

 

What’s the difference between NVRAM and NVDIMM in NetApp systems?
Both protect write data that hasn’t reached disk yet. Older FAS controllers use separate NVRAM cards or modules, while newer AFF controllers such as the A400 and A800 use NVDIMMs that sit in memory slots.
